Stallion weathers late Kaya surge to clinch UFL win
Stallion Sta.Lucia survived a furious rally by Kaya FC to escape with a 3-2 victory in United Football League action Tuesday night at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill in Taguig.
Holding a comfortable 3-nil edge at halftime, Stallion looked poised to cruise to an easy triumph.
Kaya then had the golden chance to score its first goal at the 60th minute, but Anton del Rosario missed a penalty kick attempt.
Despite the miss, that play started things off for Kaya, which suddenly found its rhythm late in the match. Alex Obiang then buried a breakaway goal at the 74th minute to finally give Kaya its first goal and trim their deficit to 3-1.
Making up for his penalty miss, del Rosario then got past defenders before hitting the back of the net at the 76th minute to put Kaya just within one, 3-2.
Kaya continued to threaten in the attack since then, but still fell short of completing the comeback as attempts by Janrick Soriano at the 79th minute and Obiang at the 86th minute failed to find the mark.
Rufo Sanchez, Lee Joo Young and Jeremy Hohn scored one goal apiece in the first half for Stallion, which grabbed its 12th victory with only a loss to show for 36 points and the top spot in the League table.
Kaya, meanwhile, suffered its first loss under new coach David Perkovic after registering three wins and four losses since his tenure. The squad remained idle at fifth place with a 4-6-3 win-draw-loss record for 18 points.
