Nate Burkey leads Kaya to comeback win over Global
Striker Nate Burkey buried two crucial goals to help Kaya FC topple defending champion Global FC in a 3-2 comeback victory in United Football League action Thursday night at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill in Taguig.
Kaya found itself trailing early in the match as Global quickly caught fire in the attack. Patrick Reichelt nailed back-to-back goals at the seventh and the eighth minute to put the reigning League titlist to a quick 2-nil lead.
But Kaya managed to keep close in the match, as Masa Omura found the back of the net at the 19th minute off a free kick miss to trim his squad’s deficit to 2-1.
After the shot, Global keeper Roland Sadia had to be subbed out as he injured his hand in a save during the play. That led to the entry of goalkeeper Eduard Sacapaño, who made his debut for the team since his loan transfer from Philippine Army last March.
But Sacapaño also figured in a long lull during the match after sustaining a wound on his head in a play. Medical staff had to attend to his injury and put a bandage on it, prompting referees to put 10 minutes of added time in the first half, which Global ended with the lead.
Kaya came out with renewed energy after the break, with only a goal away from tying the match. Burkey then delivered the equalizer, stealing the ball off a poor Global clearance and firing a shot at the 54th minute to even the score at 2-2.
Burkey completed the comeback for Kaya moments after, as he nailed a shot off a miss by OJ Porteria at the 83rd minute to give Kaya the lead.
Global tried to salvage the match with a game-tying goal, but a header by Reichelt at the 86th minute and a corner kick play in added time failed to find their mark.
The victory helped Kaya tighten its grip in fourth place in the League table with a 4-3-2 win-draw-loss record for 15 points.
Meanwhile, Global suffered its first loss of the season after registering seven wins and one loss to settle for second place behind fellow contender Stallion Sta.Lucia.
