With the international break coming to an end, attention returns to the Philippines Football League, where the regular season is approaching its crescendo. The top half of the table is jockeying for position to secure one of four available spots in the Finals Series, making Saturday’s contest between Kaya Makati and Ceres Negros a massive fixture for both contenders. The match kicks off at 7pm, at the Panaad Stadium.

“It’s always difficult to play Ceres, especially on their home turf. But we came here with the objective to get the three points in tomorrow’s game,” said Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida.

Makati is on a run of three consecutive PFL victories, the last of which was at the expense of rivals, and current league leaders, Meralco Manila.

“After that game against Meralco we had a good and well spent break. When we got back to training, the morale of the team was high, and the intensity of the training was high,” said Marcaida. “I can see that the players are very motivated, and everyone is looking forward to playing Ceres.”

Saturday’s opposition, however, is one that holds two wins over Kaya this season.

“The Kaya mentality is we always move on,” said Noel.

“Although we lost our previous two games against them, the way I see it, they weren’t lopsided games. We created lots of chances. The breaks went to Ceres. So I think in tomorrow’s game, if we get the same chances, and we convert them, we’ll get a positive result.”

Ceres Negros will be missing a few key players due to various injuries. Most notably, star midfielder Manny Ott won’t be present after suffering a knee problem while on national team duty. The game will also come too early for Martin Steuble and Luke Woodland, both members of the Philippine team.

“As we’ve done in the past, we’ll come up with solutions,” said Ceres Negros captain, Steuble.

“I think with the depth of our squad, we are able to find replacements. With a few adjustments, we’ll be able to beat a strong opponent in Kaya tomorrow.”

Ceres Negros currently sits third in the PFL standings, six points behind second placed Kaya Makati, but having played a whopping six games less.
