9 October 2019 — A week after their scoreless draw, Kaya FC–Iloilo and Mendiola FC 1991 tangle again on Wednesday afternoon at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa City. With Mendiola reduced to 10 men for majority of their last encounter, Kaya walked away from the stalemate rather frustrated — a result their hoping to rectify in the teams’ final clash of the 2019 Philippines Football League.

“The motivation of the team heading into the game is to improve the performance from a disappointing result last Wednesday against Mendiola. We need to be more clinical and to convert our chances,” said Iloilo head coach Noel Marcaida. “Physically, the camp is okay, but it’s more of a mental challenge now. Everyone knows the importance of getting the three points, as we need to get a firm hold on the second spot in the league.”

With Ceres Negros almost certain to claim their third consecutive league title, Kaya’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s AFC Cup rests on defending the Copa Paulino Alcantara, and ensuring the highest possible finish in the league.

“The target of course is to win the remaining [four] games, get the maximum points and build from there heading into the Cup. It’s also an opportunity for some players to play more minutes and to get confidence going into the Cup,” added Marcaida.

Wednesday’s clash is the beginning of a hectic spell of four matches in 11 days for Kaya, where the club will face Mendiola, Stallion Laguna, Green Archers United, and Ceres Negros, respectively.
