In the 2018 Philippines Football League season, only one team has avoided defeat at the hands of Kaya FC–Iloilo. That team also happens to be dead last in the standings, with only one win to its name after 20 matches played. Interestingly enough, that solitary victory came at the expense of the PFL’s current second placed club, Kaya FC–Iloilo. The two sides clash on Wednesday, 3pm, in Carmona, with Iloilo keen on ending its drought against Cebu.

“The game is very important to us. Our objective is to finish the league strong and hold on to that second spot. But also, it’s an opportunity to play against Global, the only team we haven’t beaten yet,” said Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida.

Iloilo returned to winning ways in its last outing, a commanding 3-0 display against JPV Marikina on Sunday afternoon. The victory snapped a two-game slide, and put the club’s drive to secure second spot back on track.

“The morale is very positive. In training, the intensity is really high,” said Marcaida. “We just need to keep the intensity that we showed in the previous game.”

Wednesday’s clash at Carmona was originally scheduled to be played at the Iloilo Sports Complex, but both clubs agreed to move the fixture in order to avoid chances of a forfeiture. Back in May, Global Cebu cited financial issues for their failure to show up for what should have been Kaya’s first match in Iloilo.

“Masarap sana makalaro sa home pero ito yung binigay. I don’t think it will matter that much [in how the game plays out], as long as mag-stick kami sa game plan namin, things might work out the way we want it to,” said Kaya rookie Mike Menzi.

Cebu has undergone an overhaul in the transfer window, including a change of coach following Marjo Allado recent resignation. Menzi, however, believes it would be a mistake to take Global lightly.

“Well it’s Global, you still expect it’s going to be a tough game. Marami na silang new signing. But ganun parin yung mindset namin. Whoever we play, mentally ready kaming lahat.”
