Without a match for two weeks, Kaya FC–Iloilo enter Saturday’s encounter with Mendiola FC well rested and eager to return to regular Philippine Football League action. Both sides are coming from victories, with a retooled Mendiola looking particularly dangerous after dishing out a 5-2 blowout of Green Archers United last Wednesday.
“That was classic San Beda style counter-attacking on display,” said Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida. “They are very good at defending deep and breaking very quickly when they recover possession.”
Armed with three new foreign recruits, Dan Padernal’s side is quickly looking like a new force. But with Iloilo having recently lost their hold of top spot in the PFL standings, there’s a real motivation within Kaya to close the gap once more.
Kaya came from behind to best Mendiola, 4-2, in their first encounter, a match in which Eric Giganto’s brace was integral.
“We can’t allow ourselves to concede an early goal like what happened in our first encounter. It’s important to have control of the tempo from start to finish, especially as they are coming from a commanding victory against Archers. It’s important that we stay sharp and build momentum heading into our busy run of fixtures in August,” added Marcaida.
Kickoff is scheduled at 3:30PM, and can be streamed live over PFLTV.ph.
