A July of Opportunity
The first quarter of the inaugural Philippines Football League season has come and passed very quickly, and with it, a mixed bag of results for Kaya FC–Makati. Since May 6, the club has played seven matches, winning three, drawing one and losing three.
Ironically, the pair of 3-1 losses to Global Cebu and Ceres Negros were arguably the team’s best performances, with the score lines far from reflecting how the games actually played out. Such is football’s cruel nature at times, that those incredible displays of effort and quality yielded zero points, and will quickly be glossed over by those whose focus rests solely on the final score.
While the defeat to Meralco Manila was perhaps the team’s flattest outing so far, there were assured performances against Davao Aguilas, Ilocos United, and Stallion Laguna, that produced rather comfortable victories.
But after absorbing back-to-back defeats to finish off the first round, the arrival of July brings about a unique opportunity for the club to kick the campaign into higher gear. With seven matches tightly packed into a single month, Kaya will see action virtually twice-a-week, for the next four weeks.
It all begins with a chance to set things right against Global, who visit UMak on Sunday, July 2 (4pm kickoff). That match is followed by a trip to Laguna to face Stallion on the 5th. The team then flies to Davao to play the Aguilas four days later (July 9), before returning home to take on JPV Marikina for the first time, on the 16th. Kaya next entertains Ilocos United for two consecutive games at home, on the 19th, and 23rd. The grueling month is capped off with another visit to Laguna on the 30th.
While the schedule will be challenging for the entire team, the 21 points on offer could drastically strengthen Makati’s position in the standings. The club currently sits fifth with 10 points, behind JPV Marikina, Meralco Manila, Global Cebu, and Ceres Negros respectively.
