2021 PFL Season Kickoff Date Released Mark your calendars, Kaya will return to the domestic stage on July 17th.
The PFF have officially set the start date for the 2021 PFL Season, marking the club’s long-awaited return to Philippine football. Fans can look forward to a season of expansion with an increased number of matches, as well as familiar foes Laos FC and Loyola FC likely returning to the fray.
Eyes now turn to the July 17 kickoff, the date decided on by league officials to be the soonest possible time to safely stage the competition. The football season was supposed to return in April with the Copa Paulino Alcantara, but the tournament was recently called off due to the rising number of cases in the country. Instead, the PFF have decided to hold out for vaccines to become available, with the intention to be able to operate in a semi-bubble capacity for the newly expanded league.
Although last year’s season was extraordinarily short, the effort and competence it took to operate in such tricky times, along with the quality of the matches, was enough to entice Laos and Loyola back into top flight football. Both clubs are already undergoing their licensing process, meaning an exciting eight-team tussle for Philippine football supremacy will begin in a few months.
As the Philippines’ representatives in continental competition this year, though, both Kaya FC-Iloilo and United City FC will likely be in action even before the league start. But with AFC yet to reveal the specific dates for the Champions League, any potential overlap remains uncertain.
With over two full months of preparation ahead, there’s still plenty of work to be done. Kaya still has two foreign player slots to be filled, and the team is reportedly looking to bolster their depth at the midfielder and forward positions. Further announcements on that front will be made in the near future.
