Manila, Philippines — It was a tale of two penalty kicks: one emphatically scored, the other heroically saved. Both moments worked in favor of Kaya FC-Iloilo, as the reigning Philippines Football League champions clinched the title once again with a 1-0 triumph over Davao Aguilas-UMAK FC.

The match showcased a fascinating contrast in playing styles. Iloilo, known for their attacking prowess, dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities. Davao, on the other hand, remained defensively resolute, looking to exploit Kaya on the counterattack.

The turning point arrived in the 18th minute when Davao’s Reynal Villareal brought down Jarvey Gayoso in the penalty box. In his final game for the club, the striker did the honor himself and drove his shot into the top right corner, giving Iloilo the crucial lead. (1-0)

The second half saw the intensity settle as Kaya opted to control the tempo and stifle their opponent’s attacking threats. However, drama unfolded in the 81st minute when Uriel Dalapo earned Davao a penalty of their own.

The tension was palpable as Ibrahima Ndour stepped up to the spot for the Aguilas. Earlier in the game, the forward had exchanged heated words with Kaya’s goalkeeper, Walid Birrou— adding to the drama of this pivotal moment. Displaying nerves of steel, Birrou read the penalty perfectly, diving to his right and making a heroic save to preserve the lead.

Following his vital save, Iloilo effectively closed the door on Davao’s comeback hopes. The final whistle blew, and Kaya FC-Iloilo were crowned PFL champions once again. Moreover, they now have the opportunity to cap off what could be an invincible season in their upcoming finale against Loyola FC.
